The Long Road to Recovery Part 7

Find the rest of Ivy’s story in the Eden Lives Healthy archive. (Sorry for the long hiatus. My life got a little complicated. You’ll find out more about it in Part Nine.) A year and a few months after falling off my horse, I was finally getting treatment for the muscles that I had damaged during the fall. I was having a specialized physical therapist stick electric needles in my butt. Why was he sticking electric needles in my butt? Running electrical impulses through a muscle will make that muscle contract, but my muscles...

The Long Road to Recovery: Part Six

It had been over a year since my fall from my horse, but I obviously still needed medical treatment. I went to my general physician who confirmed that something was wrong with my hip, but couldn’t pinpoint what the problem was. He wanted to do an MRI, but since I only have catastrophic insurance, I would have had to pay for it myself and MRI’s are expensive. Instead, we decided to get some basic X-rays taken to be sure that nothing other than my tail bone had been broken. Fortunately, the X-rays showed no damage other than the...

The Long Road to Recovery: Part Five

I love doing sit-ups. I know that most people hate them, but I’ve always liked them. Well, I like the kind of sit-up that I do, which is not your standard military sit-up. The type of sit-up that I do is called a v-sit. Basically I balance on my buttocks and pull my legs and torso up and together at the same time. I bend my legs as I bring them up so that my knees are in front of my face when I am at the highest point of the sit-up, and straighten them as I lower them, so that they end up roughly parallel to the floor. Neither my...

The Long Road to Recovery: Part Four

After having spent almost six months engaging in almost no strenuous activities, then re-injuring my ribs while trying to clean up the debris from the flood, I was frustrated beyond belief with my out of shape and easily damaged body. But there is a reason that I get along so well with my donkeys; I am as stubborn an ass as they are. I might not have been able to do the kind of exercises that I was used to doing in the past, but I could walk. I began walking on the treadmill that I have in my living room. I don’t really like walking...

EdenLivesHealthy: Club Wrap-up

Eden Lives Healthy was a club that was created to give folks here on Eden Fantasys a place to encourage and root each other on in their healthy living; no matter the endeavor. Due to many, many reasons, the club has changed its method of operation. There will no longer be a monthly meeting. You are absolutely welcome to come into the forum thread that have been set up and share your story and encourage others in theirs; however, the monthly goals and gatherings have ceased. Don’t be terribly discouraged though! We have opened up the...

The Long Road to Recovery: Part 3

For the rest of this story go here: Part 1 and Part 2 After almost six months of doing nothing buy laying on my nest of pillows waiting for my body to heal, I finally began moving around again. I still couldn’t move very well. My tail bone continued to hurt a great deal when any strain or pressure was put on it. My right leg hardly hurt at all anymore, but it still wasn’t moving quite the way it was supposed to. My walk had a little bit of a hitch to it. It wasn’t a very noticeable hitch, but it was there. My ribs also...

The Long Road To Recovery: Part Two

You can find Part One here. The day after I was thrown from my horse, I was still in a tremendous amount of pain. I could barely move and could not fully control my right leg. I admitted to myself that, like it or not, I needed some sort of help. So I went to a chiropractor that several of my riding friends recommended. He popped my ribs back into place and worked on my back and hip. After several days, I could completely control my right leg again, although it still hurt like hell. After two weeks, he convinced me to go to one of those...

The Long Road to Recovery Part 1

Over the past few years, I have suffered a series of unfortunate events that have taken me from being a healthy, slender, athletic woman, to being out of shape, weak and overweight. By medical standards, I may not be overweight, but by my own standards I am. And I have definitely lost the strength, stamina and flexibility that I once had. Part of it is simply growing older. I will never be as fit as I was when I was in my mid-twenties or even my mid-thirties, but I can be in better shape than I am now. The problems started about four years...

Being Active Outdoors

It’s finally that time of year, where the weather is nice and the sun is shining most days. So, why not make the most of it by making being outdoors part of your activity plan? There’s plenty to do out there, and most of us are lucky to have interesting places to go that aren’t too far from our homes. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with getting outside and enjoying your own back yard, either. State Parks and nature sanctuaries are great places to visit to get some outdoor activity. You can walk, run, hike, climb,...
