Eden Photographers Club

Hosted by Vaccinium

We all have an inner artist. For some of us that artist scratches at the surface and breaks through easily, and for others it sleeps deep within us, yearning to find its path to the surface. Also for many of us, the art of photography beguiles our minds by faithfully reproducing the world around us and, at times, by morphing that world into something truly resplendent and transcendental. Wanting your photos to approach that degree of elegance and style is the first step in either finding that inner artist or coaxing more from it to create these visions of beauty. The Eden Fantasys Photography Club is a means for any adult to achieve this by exploring and sharing his or her artistic abilities through the medium of photography. Monthly meetings and photo “assignments”, weekly articles, and the ability to share your art and critique that of others will help improve your photography immeasurably, whether you are a beginner or quite advanced. If you have any questions about the club and its activities, simply contact Vaccinium by messaging him at his Eden Fantasys profile , by emailing him at [email protected], or posting in the Eden Photographers subforum.

EdenPhotographers: August Wrap-Up

Earlier this week (Tuesday, August 16th, 2011), we had our sixth Eden Photographers meeting. Thank you for everyone who came and participated, and I hope everyone will be able to come next month as well. Hopefully there will be others who missed this meeting who will also be able to join us. For those of you who have never joined us, we get together each month to discuss photography, go through examples of how to improve your photography, and simply have fun. The main focus of this meeting was to discuss histograms. Specifically, I ran through...

EdenPhotography: August Announcement

It’s time for another meeting of the Eden Photographers Club! For June’s Eden Photographers meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, August 16 at 7:00 EDT, we will be covering histograms – a topic that was voted on and selected by you, the EdenFantasys community. Actually, it was a pretty easy vote to tabulate this time, since only one of you actually voted. *shakes head* Regardless, histograms are extremely important for the digital photographer. I actually feel they are the most important aspect of digital photography relative to film...

EdenPhotography: Expressing Emotion

Sometimes the best way to create a memorable photo is to discard the notion that it should be about a subject or a scene. Creating a photo that is based on emotion can produce some tremendous photos, but it can be difficult to go out with the intention of producing said photo. Instead, sometimes everything lines up perfectly for your photo to convey the emotion you are feeling or want the viewer to feel. Sometimes you’ll need to tweak things a bit to get the desired effect. There are certainly a great many emotions out there that can...

EdenPhotography: June

It’s time for another meeting of the Eden Photographers Club! For June’s Eden Photographers meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, July 19 at 7:00 EDT, we will be covering lighting – a topic that was voted on and selected by you, the EdenFantasys community. Photograph *is* the capture of light, so it is unavoidable that knowing you to deal with and manipulate light is crucially important in getting the types of photos you can be proud of. Also, given how well critiquing went during the last meeting, I will be introducing a new feature...

Cropping

Cropping

So, you took a picture you really like, but… There’s something wrong with it. Is it a stick poking in from the side that you missed? Did you want your subject just a bit more towards that corner? Is there too much negative space? Whatever the issue, it’s just driving you nuts that you didn’t pay close enough attention when you were taking the photo, and now there is no way to fix it. But wait, that’s not necessarily true. I’m not suggesting any fancy photo-processing tricks, here, but rather some simple...

Eden Photography: June Wrap-Up

On Tuesday, June 21, 2011, we had our fourth Eden Photographers meeting. Thank you to everyone who came and participated, and I hope everyone will be able to come next month, as well. Hopefully there will be others who missed this meeting who will also be able to join us. This month we went through a tutorial on how to critique photographs. Everyone at the meeting pointed out something positive and something negative about several photographs, and got to see a full critique to see other aspects they may have missed. Critiquing is an important...

Silhouettes

Silhouettes

Given the proper light conditions, having an object silhouetted can transform a perfectly mundane photo into a memorable one. I think most people from my generation had a portrait made from their silhouette when we were kids – it was a fad back in the Stone Age…I mean the 70′s. Although the heyday of silhouette portraits has mercifully gone by the wayside, silhouetting subjects is still a popular photographic technique. Any strong light source coming from behind a subject or scene can produce a strong silhouette. In general,...

Negative space

Negative space

Negative space is the portion of a photo that is relatively devoid of features or contrasting colors.  Most photos have some amount of negative space and that’s not necessarily a…well…negative.  Photos that work really well and that have a lot of negative space do so because the photo is as much about the negative space as it is about the subject.  To put it another way, negative space can be put to good use of it puts the subject in perspective (Figure 1).  A shaft of light hitting a sailboat in the surroundings of a...

Eden Photography Club: June

It’s time for another meeting of the Eden Photographers Club! For June’s Eden Photographers meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, June 21 at 7:00 EDT, we will be critiquing and discussing how it can benefit you as the person doing the photographing. Although I’ve already posted an article on this subject, I will run through a tutorial on what types of things to look for when you critique others’ photography or your own.. We will also be talking about the prior month’s critiquing, and introducing the following months theme for...
